Trump cannot escalate a new conflict, the elections just around the corner. His entire presidency revolved around preventing a new conflict. He did not follow up on that promise (i.e. Attacking assad in 2016 and 2017 via Tomahawk Cruise Missiles) but a few months ago in October he used that same campaign promise as an argument to withdraw support for the Kurds who were fighting and keeping ISIS fighters detained. And now all of a sudden, he is using military force against entirely different target

Absolutely. Which is why this is all the more puzzling to me, too. We can consider a few things... for starters, Trump is getting bad advice from Israel hawks in the State Department and the Defense. And perhaps Kushner is pushing misinformation to him too? But Trump is not an idiot... these things have been made clear to him many times by good people. Then again, the extent of the influence of Neocons in the established government departments, along with media propaganda and disinformation, and pressure from the likes of AIPAC and other Jewish lobbies is almost overwhelming... it must be hard to retain a clear head through all of that. Pompeio is totally pro-Zionist too, anti-Iran. Bought and paid for by AIPAC. Trump must be confused in all of this...

The other alternative could be that he is actually being threatened or pressured to do this... as a "lesser" option than all-out war with Iran. One can only speculate at this point... but this is not a rational decision by Trump, especially not with the election later this year.

Trump will get reelected, if he doesn't things would advance much faster and we're not ready yet, his momentum is too big to stop anyway, his fan base is large.

The war will not be all out, look forward to a tedious back and forth. It's a prelude to the real war that will happen with China.

To be fair they did fund Shia militants who bombed the US marine barracks in Beirut in the 80s and organised a terror attack against a Jewish centre in Buenos Ares during the 90s. So Iran is not some innocent puppy. However, the Gulf states faarrrr supassed the Mullah in Tehran in the global damage of terrorism. They turned all of pre-9/11 Afghanistan and large swaths of post 9/11 Pakistan into Stone Age societies by funding extremist Madrassas that the Pakistani government are too scared to clamp down on. The second generation European immigrant kid who gun down or stab predestrians/bystanders or blow them self up are inspired the ideas ensposed by the House of Saud and the US's Sunni majority 'Allies' and not Iran.
