What are your thoughts of Polygamy?

It is a practice that is popular in the Islamic world but ancient people have practiced this one way or another. King Solomon, for example, had 300 wives.

Do you find Polygamy to be impractical and wrong in today's age? And if so, is there a justification for it?

I was told that Polygamy was popular in Islam because wars were fought, causing widows, in which the man takes responsibility and weds her into the family. Can this be valid today?
