Also to put it into perspective I would have to drive like 4-5 hours just to get to an Amtrak station, using that much gas and still having to pay for the ticket I could just fly for the same price anywhere in America; unless you are super poor and live very close to the very spread out stations, there really is no use for trains anymore.

For the same reasons the Americans gave them up: passenger transport moved to the air or to the highways and railway transport was just for hauling freight - for which you need a much less dense network.

Tourist train. Peru doesn't have a proper regular passenger network in most of the country either.

Also railways need constant surveying and upkeep, especially in places like America that require bridges.

That explains why long-distance trains died out, but there still could be a usage for more local or regional networks, of which only Buenos Aires Province to my knowledge really has one.

São Paulo and Rio both have some as well. And there seems to be some minor stuff around Santiago de Chile.

All very small-scale and not at all comparable to the extensive rail networks many cities in Europe and Asia have.

Actually, the burros in Latin America are usually the politicians.

The sad fact is, that much of Latin America stopped developing after 1900 and only began developing again after 1965 - which is the moment when the railways were in massive decline.
