And vehicles like trucks becoming more common and available.

It would be interesting though: to see what would happen if a country like Argentina went rolling along again and also redeveloped its rail network. They could, theoretically, become a big player. Like European countries. They have the topography and, in the center, the population density for a very interesting network.

Best possible location is Rio-Sao Paulo, two megalopolis distant of around 400 km.
Brazil one considered a high speed rail track.

But eventually they thought more appropriate to invest in Olympic Games and football World Cup.

And Buenos Aires-Rosario but that was cancelled in 2012. To create a Buenos Aires-Montevideo link would also be interesting - if they could get around the wider parts of the Río de la Plata.

Yea, the Panama Canal has kinda screwed up their logistics and transportation network since everyone just uses it instead of going all the way around. If they had major rail system they could boost their economy alongside good policies and deals. Argentina's economy is really wonky right now, they need to rework their tax system.

They could build a tunnel or bridge to connect the two capital cities. More generally, with Covid 19 wrecking the global airline industry, could trains make a comeback in Latin America (and indeed elsewhere)?

They don't have the money for that.
