Hey guys,
First of all, it is a critical discussion that doesn't mean to troll.Rather I hope that once we have this discussion, it will do good to Latin America and the people who live in it as a whole. For instance, some posters here have mentioned its mostly the Hispanic Americans who have a sort of ethnocentrism towards their own country; I think this is much more of a trait in Anglo-American culture.
In contrast, I noticed that many Latinos that I meet from all around the North, Central, and South American tend to have self-hatred. The following traits: low ethnocentrism, wanting to be white, wanting to be accepted by Europeans, or trying not to talk much about their country or their culture. Moreover, there's no solidarity with other Latin American groups both within countries and across countries.
Moreover, I don't think this is a trait unique to the lower and middle masses but also of the upper middle classes. I do believe this includes Brazilians as well.
For instance, I met this girl from Costa Rica(she was from harniza to castiza) but would say she is America, who was managing an Airbnb, and her way of advertising would be we have tons of Europeans who stay in our hotel.
Another example is I met a Venezuelan businessman who told me he saw nothing in common between himself and the more impoverished Venezuela. They were in two different worlds and wouldn't live in their neighborhoods.
Another example would be of Brazilians I met who lived in LA and wanted to be seen as Californian and having white girlfriends as opposed to being from Brazil.
From my own country(so you see I'm not trying to bash other countries not), I had a Peruvian girl who was Castiza almost white, but she would not like mingling with other Peruvians. She went to a prestigious liberal arts college and wanted only to have white friends. She saw herself as much more related to white Americans than to either Peruvians nor other people from Latin America.
You might say that of course, this behavior is typical among people from all over the world. That is true, but I think its much more common in people with Hispanic or even Latin American cultures than in other cultures. I firmly believe this might be:
1-Mestizajes, where what is European is seen as superior.
2-It might how society the oligarchs set up a nation. I'm not blaming Spaniards like people assume the colonial model instead and continued by the elites of certain countries( that was set up is meant to break any ethnocentrism and focus on individual success as opposed to collective group success. For instance, an indomestizo or mestizo could climb up the class ranks marry a European, and then he might not have to relate at all with the dark-skinned masses. Unlike in the Anglo-American society where even rich blacks are trying to use their money to improve the situation of more impoverished blacks since they see each other as a community.
What do you guys think?
