The US has made it quite clear, Democrats and Republicans alike (except Trump) that we cannot allow Russia to have more economic influence than the US has, even over its neighboring and related states. I'm pretty sure the propaganda against Russia has much more to do with the US extracting its protection money and selling its other awful popular culture.

Yeah, you described exactly the American thinking. But USA IS a democracy. It doesn't mean that it is absolutely bad or good, it only means that USA is predictable, because politicians in democracies can't change quickly the way they think and do. Dictatorships are not predictable, because dictators are responsible only for themselves and for a small clique. Russia is not a real democracy, has never been. It can be good or bad, as well as USA, but in a unpredictable way. Russia can occupy neighboring areas without US stylish observable proactivity.
