China pneumonia outbreak and a novel coronavirus

Wuhan City, China has been a focus for infectious disease and public health experts over the past month due to a pneumonia outbreak where the etiology is not quite clear. News keeps trickling in on this outbreak, but there is still a lot unknown. Hoping to shed some light on this outbreak today is Daniel Lucey, MD, MPH. Dr Lucey is a Senior Scholar with the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law. He is also an adjunct Professor of Medicine-Infectious Diseases at Georgetown University Medical Center.

The pneumonia outbreak in Wuhan, Hubei province, China has been a rapidly moving and fluid news story with new information coming out on a daily basis. In this video, I look at the most recent information as of January 12 from the World Health Organization and Chinese health authorities. In addition, a number of scientists have discussed the virus on Twitter and I look at some of these statements. In this video, I try to do an update with the rapidly-fired information that is put out daily on the Wuhan City, China novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak. I show that the case count has jumped to nearly 200 in Wuhan, in line with predictions with global infectious disease analysis. We also see the first confirmed case in China outside of Wuhan. The coronavirus in China is spreading, and largely could have been prevented. A town 7 km from where the virus was discovered in Wuhan had a state run banquet with 100,000 people eating off of the same dishes. This was 2 days after 49 cases were confirmed in Wuhan, China. The Chinese government is trying to save face, and now it is backfiring.
