Actually - from a Dutch perspective it was a massive amount of land. Apart from some minor areas - much of Drenthe, Brabant of the States and Overijssel (indeed: much of Central Guelders) were barely settled. It was just forest, swampy peatlands and moorland - and the occasional small farming community here and there. At the time, Drenthe had 20.000 inhabitants and was so poor that it didn't have its representatives in the States-General, didn't need to pay taxes and had de-facto home rule. It would take until the 19th century until the moors and forests would finally be cleared and the swamps cleared. With the Republic, as a whole, only having 1 to 1.5 million inhabitants ? Why should the Dutch have cared about America ?
