    Default The Vauxhall Story

If you like cars, or even if you don’t like cars, Vauxhall has very likely been a big part of your life. If you haven’t owned one, you’ve hired one, been driven around in one, or seen them day in day out on the streets. And for good reason. Vauxhall has been pumping out affordable mainstream cars for decades. But its fortunes have gone up, then down, up, then down, up, then down, and finally up then sort of down? over the oh, 162 years it’s been in business!

Wake up and smell the coffee.

The early 1900's..man, how things have changed over the course of a mere century where my paternal grandfather was just a young boy. He died at the age of 110 in March, 2010. RIP. Hard to believe that the British car company was one of the engines(pun intended of course) of British powerhouse economy at that time to simply a footnote of it due to automation by robotics and etc. In fact, the late 90's had far more workers than today which is less than 3,000 workers.

The death knell for British car companies was Thatcher privatising council housing. The moment this happened the price of housing ballooned in the hands of speculators and the car companies couldn't keep up with the increases in what a sustainable living wage for their employees was. This eventually led to the winding down of the car industry as a whole in Britain and a surge in the cost of living, but the small team of speculators did make a killing so I guess that's something.

I've never quite managed to understand why there's a Vauxhall in Britain and Opel in other countries, since at the end of the day it's the same shitty model cars they make...

LOL -- this is a classic:

Old Top Gear (Copyright BBC Worldwide) from 1996 Jeremy Clarkson looks at the new Vauxhall Vectra. Hilarious. All songs, copyrights goes to their retrospective owners.

This review seems to have KILLED sales of the Vectra.

I used to watch Top Gear nearly everyday from my local TV channel, MBC Action, till Jeremy Clarkson and the crew left the show in 2015. I swear, the Brits are better at making English language knowledge TV shows(cars, documentary films, science, physics and etc) far better than their American counterparts.

Much better ! But it wouldn't surprise me if Brexit will lead to a loss of prestige of the English language and Anglo culture here in Mainland Europe. The French are waiting in the wings. Plus: when it comes to films and TV series - the Scandinavians have long since captured Dutch (and probably elsewhere in Europe too) hearts. The last British successes date back to the early 90s.
