The education system in the US is the worst in the developed nation to the point that the education system here in the UAE(which is based on the US) is far more superior than it's American counterpart. We also have British and French systems here depending on the school you go to.

it is absolutely abysmal. The teachers there are in no way qualified to be doing the job.

Because it's obvious that they want to fill in the spaces since 98% of all the schools in the US are public schools which is the opposite here where most of the schools here are private whether it's based on American, British or French education system. Indian schools here for example are private, and they follow the British education system which is very high in quality. No joke. I have an Indian friend, who is a catholic christian from Goa, used to live in the US when he was little before migrating here when he was a teenager, and told me that the education system in the US is very bad in comparison to here.

I wouldn’t say it has the worst, but American lower-level education is pretty unimpressive. Reasons being are highly debatable and not very well understood, but there are signs of students lagging behind in American schools compared to other first-world countries.

The reasons are understood or at least mostly for me :

1.) Feminism : it used to be that women had only two career choices being nurse and teacher and highly intelligent women would invariably choose teacher while the rest chose either to be a housewife or nurse. Now women can be a doctor, laywer, CEO etc.. etc.. so now we have stupid teachers teaching kids.

2.) The nature of state schools : the first compulsory state school system was in Prussia and it was lead by the philosopher Hegel (Schopenhauer would never would have agreed to it) and its main goal was to create obedient sheeple or lemmings who all thought exactly the same about the issues of the epoch or time. Instead of public education being used to teach children healthy learning attitudes, they are used for the opposite, to indoctrinate children with dogma, often patently false, even known to be false by the officials imposing the education. Now because of the model of the German Prussian state school system pretty much all state schools in the modern West are lackluster.

3.) American culture is anti-intellectual and kids think doing good in school, especially science and math, is nerdy.

There may be more reasons but those are the top three off the top of my head (no pun intended) currently at 4:39 AM when I am not completely awake or cognizant.

There will come a day when education will be mostly achieved via Internet with the help of systems and commissions.
    I hope it comes sooner.

But that removes the socialisation/socialising aspect of going to school which is arguably very important in its own right. Anyway, as for the US educational system specifically, one major problem is the way it is financed - mostly through council taxes, which severely disadvantages and underfunds inner-city schools in particular, where the local residents and taxpayers by definition usually have less money.

Socialisation can be done with the neighbourhood children. Nobody needs any schools for that.
