İslam has been utterly invaded and defeated during past centuries, including its main and holy places being overrun by invaders. Later on Western elites ruling and/or controlling Islamic countries resurrected the presence of religion in the society to control masses, to avoid the rise of secular ideologies which would be destructive and to ensure a popular sense of happiness in those societies as humans by nature need to believe that in some other parallel worlds their sufferings shall come to an end and they will find relief. Islam has also been useful in countering and taking down Soviets, thus politic Islam is also used as tool with also Islamic terrorist groups being utilized by major intelligence services.
As one person writes here, Islamic societies are the most backward in the world after Subsaharan and Hindu societies. The world is now dominated by two religions and one ideology: Protestant Christianity, Judaism and Chinese communism. Islam attracts followers in poor, weak environments (Africa and similar places) where people seek for salvation. In rich, strong societies of the world, there is no progress of Islam. Thus it shows that the religion doesn't attract the well off

This video tells how when Sultan Bayazid built central biggest mosque in Bursa called Uludzhami, there was a part of land for construction belonged to an Armenian woman and she refused to sell it to Muslims. And for a very long time they persuaded her and they asked her to sell the land and they were ready to pay a large sum of money but she refused. Finally she agreed to sell the land but she made a condition that Muslims would never pray at her land and until now on that part of the mosque Muslims do not pray.
