Default Why Finland And Denmark Are Happier Than The U.S.

What does it take to be happy? The Nordic countries seem to have it all figured out. Finland and Denmark have consistently topped the United Nations’ most prestigious index, The World Happiness Report, in all six areas of life satisfaction: income, healthy life expectancy, social support, freedom, trust and generosity. Learn more about work-life balance secrets from the happiest countries in the world on CNBC Make It: https://cnb.cx/37So3YY

Each year, a group of happiness experts from around the globe rank 156 countries based on how “happy” citizens are, and they publish their findings in the World Happiness Report. Happiness might seem like an elusive concept to quantify, but there is a science to it. When researchers talk about “happiness,” they’re referring to “satisfaction with the way one’s life is going,” Jeff Sachs, co-creator of the World Happiness Report and a professor at Columbia University, tells CNBC Make It. “It’s not primarily a measure of whether one laughed or smiled yesterday, but how one feels about the course of one’s life,” he says. Since the report began in 2012, Nordic countries — which include Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland, plus the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Aland — consistently turn up at the top of the list. (The United States, on the other hand, typically lands somewhere around 18th or 19th place.)

Happiness is measured by ignorance. The most unhappy people tend to be very critical, so that they are always willing and wanting to change their environment for the better.

Not always. Sometimes - some people develop reasonably good systems which allow for greater personal happiness and give people the chance to develop themselves. As for stupid. We only need to look at PISA scores. America scores consistently the lowest or close to being the lowest of all developed countries. Denmark and Finland - near the top.

I'm not referring to education or any sort of measurable 'intelligence,' but rather the attitude that many people have, of not questioning their home environment, assuming it's 'the best' and so on. People from Texas love Texas, think it's the greatest place on earth. Everyone else hates it. While (White) New Yorkers, Parisians, etc, constantly complain about their city--always expecting that it could be, or should be, better... and that's what makes those cities great.

And you're right, not all the time, this only explains some aspects-- some people obviously have shitty lives and are unhappy because they are powerless to do anything about it, for sure... and others (such as people in Sudan or even, say, Poland) only see things like Rap videos and Bling from pop stars in the US and think, "wow, my life sucks, I could live in America and be rich with gold teeth and a Lamborghini" etc etc and thus become unhappy.

Yeah but U.S. whites have still performed well in PISA. The PISA results of the United States in 2015 are broken down by race here: http://nces.ed.gov/surveys/pisa/pisa...hlights_5e.asp. Based on the average score in mathematics, science, and reading, the only predominantly white countries which ranked higher than U.S. whites (519) were Estonia (524), Canada (524), and Finland (523).

Oh. The Danes are Finns definitely question how things are going (you can see this in election results) but they are o.k with the general system - they just think it needs tweaking. I'd say that their politics are just far more rational than America's or Britain's.

Maybe they don't vote for stupid politicians and hold their to higher standard?

It's a combination of both, I guess. Of course, migration is still a problem but I am increasingly under the impression that there is a lot of American and Russian fake news floating about.

But even those PISA scores don't reflect themselves in the policies voted upon by the electorate. So either we can say that your PISA scores are, in reality, much lower and that the U.S is fiddling the books (which is what I think is the case) or the American public is made to act irrationally.

Sure, but let's face it, most people would be depressed to have to live in Finland or Denmark, even if it is very civilized... Whereas in the Balkans, where towns and cities are beautiful and interesting and full of people with dynamic and intelligent personalities (and the food!), the locals often wish to be in NW Europe or the US because, I suppose because of unrealistic TV shows and rap videos, they think people in the US are all better-off or "rich" somehow. Again, because they're the type who question their own values... I think that's a hallmark of real civilization.
