Yo tuve el color del pelo durante la mayor parte de mi infancia como el color del chaval de esta foto:


Incluso quizá algo más blanco en verano tras ir a la playa. Y en mi familia cercana éramos 3-4 chavales con ese color (y con ojos azules). En fotos parecemos salidos de Finlandia.
Luego ya se fue oscureciendo (y esto parece ser que tb les pasa a la mayoría de suecos, noruegos, etc. La mayoría de rubias suecas que vemos en realidad son teñidas pero les queda bien el color por los rasgos y parece natural). Casi seguro que tu sobrino termina teniendo un color rubio oscuro, castaño claro como David de Gea o similares.

Some of the confusion is many Americans (and Americanized Latinos) refer to all Spanish speakers as 'Spanish' because it's the language they speak. It's like how French-Canadians refer to English speakers as English regardless of their ethnic background. I remember NHL referee and former player Paul Stewart from Massachusetts say when he played for the Quebec Nordiques they'd refer to him as English. He'd tell them, "I'm not English. I'm Irish." They responded, "But you speak English."

To call someone whose family's national origins is from a Spanish speaking country and has a particular Mestizo look 'Spanish' just comes more natural than referring to someone as Hispanic or Latino.

However, I notice this is more of an East Coast thing. Out West, they're more likely to refer to people as 'Mexican' if they're a Spanish speaker.

I know. But it is many US people the ones that don´t understand the differences and throw everyone with Spanish surname as either hispanic or latino or both. Even putting us Spaniards in the same group.

Nah, you just say "My family is from Spain" when they look confused and then they say "Oh, okay."
