From my outsider's perspective the only commonly heard American regional accents that stick out are Boston/New England, New York, the South, and the Scandinavian influenced North Midwestern states. Boston is my least favourite.

    And the questions:
What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house?
What is the bug that when you touch it, it curls into a ball?
What is a bubbly carbonated drink called?
What do you call gym shoes?

I've been to Montana a couple times and never detected a strong accent. Most states from the Rocky Mountains west don't have a distinguishable accents, only subtle differences.

Those same ones stick out to Americans too but I would also include Mid-Atlantic cities like Philly and Baltimore as having very strong accents (see videos above). It's the western US and certain Midwestern states, like Nebraska, that sound kind of generic. As far as the Boston accent, it's not the most appealing, but there is more than one version.
