Some are Yéniches (nomads probably of partly Alsatian origin), others are nomads from the central and south-western France, even from the south/central-eastern for certain individuals.

They are sort of Irish gypsies but from France, if you prefer

I wanted to learn exactly what French nomads are. But when I google "French nomads", all I get are results about Gypsies.

People used the term "manouche" for them, even if it's originally a roma group so it's a bit derogative much like Irish gypsies who aren't. Nowadays they are rather called "gens du voyage" (travel people literally), which is also associated with funfair communities.

Anyway i think some look clearly eastern France, lots of familiar faces. Berger and Bergeret are common in the east even if not directly related.
