‘We’ll shut your filthy mouth’: Putin says Russia will combat the rewriting of WWII history with new free-to-all archive center

Moscow is to create the most extensive collection of WWII documents, open to all persons anywhere, to once and for all “shut the filthy mouth” of those seeking to rewrite history for short-term gains, the Russian president said.

Any person, Russian or non-national, will be able to access the archive, including through a website resource, and the ultimate goal is to debunk any disinformation about the most devastating conflict in human history, President Vladimir Putin pledged, during a meeting with veterans of the Great Patriotic War, held in St. Petersburg on Saturday.

The creation of the center would leave no chance to those willing to distort the truth about the war for their own political needs, he argued.

WW2 is such a sensitive issue with the former Soviet peoples. I imagine losing over 20 million of your population during those times tends to leave its mark. That being said, the Soviet regime was complicit in many war crimes, including those against their own people. It doesn't take away from the sacrifice and bravery these people exhibited though.

This academic study about the Battle of Kursk in 1943 ruffled a lot of Russian feathers though.

Russian President Vladimir Putin made a shocking statement during his meeting with veterans of the Great Patriotic War / Eastern Front (World War II) / in Petersburg.
"I have already spoken about this. We will necessarily create a cinema and archive material center. Background: Russia has been in dispute with Poland and the Baltic States about the origins of World War II after a resolution on the memory and history of the conflict was adopted by the European Parliament in September. The resolution states that the 1939 non-aggression treaty, signed by the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany, led to the outbreak of the war. The Russian president has denied the allegations, saying that the Soviet Union is not the only country to have reached an agreement with Nazi Germany, but a little later other Western countries. Speaking at an annual extended meeting on the Russian Defense Ministry's board in December, Putin cited archival documents suggesting that Polish Ambassador to Germany Joseph Lipski met with leading Nazi officials in 1938 to discuss Germany's plan for expulsion of Jews into Africa. (The handshake of Polish Marshal Edward Rydz-Smigla and German Attache Colonel Bogislaw von Studnitz at the Independence Day parade in Warsaw on November 11, 1938. The Names of 130,000 Oswiecim prisoners Established.

"Moscow, September 21. /TASS/ The fate of people of many countries -- victims of the Second World War -- is to be determined from the personnel records of 130,000 prisoners cf Oswiecim and the death lists of this concentration camp. Because these papers have now turned up in the Soviet archives. In 46 large file binders the details were minutely recorded day by day. Death records were filled in for over 74,000 people giving their precise birthdate and parents' names as well.

Tass correspondent Valentina Fatyukhina reports on this. The head of the Soviet Red Cross tracing service will according to Valentina Fatyukhina hand over these records to representatives of the International Red Cross. lt had been known for some time that these records were preserved in the Soviet Union -- in fact since 1964 when the trial of concentration camp guards from this camp took place in Frankfurt am Main. A Soviet representative produced several of these files on that occasion. Valentina Fatyukhina reports further that when Europe was liberated from Fascism by the Soviet Army these documentary materials ended up in the Soviet Union and landed in various archives. This obviously impeded the searoh for them.

Valentina Fatyukhina spared no trouble in her search. She directed countless inquiries and applications to official quarters. But at that time many archives remained closed. Only in the last eighteen months, as access to the archives was permitted, were these records uncovered. Nobody suspected the presence of 130,000 personnel cards in the archives. The International Red Cross intends to exploit these records as rapidly as possible."
