Nearly 27,000 civilians have fled toward Turkey from Syrian rebel-held areas in the province of Idlib in the last three days, state-run Anadolu news agency said on Sunday.
Civilians from Idlib fled to areas near the Turkish border after the Syrian government and its allies increased airstrikes and shelling last week, Anadolu said, citing the director of Syria Response Coordinators team Muhammad Hallaj.
Idlib has been tightly packed with more than 3 million inhabitants, a large part of whom are civilians that fled from fighting elsewhere in the country and thousands of rebels who took refuge in the last province that is still holding out against government forces.
Turkey and Russia signed an agreement to prevent an attack on Idlib in September 2018, setting the condition that Turkey must clear extremist groups from the province.
But the Syrian regime and Russia resumed their assault on the province last April, saying the agreement had been broken by the continuing presence of extremists.
