I've already seen plenty of Italian Americans and they are pretty different from the European ones. It's not only about language, they have a different mentality. Americanized.
This obviously is the opinion of an Italian European (but pretty much of many other Italians who see Italian-American culture different)
You are from America and you see Italian Americans with different eyes.

We don't recognize them because America is a mongrels land, thousands times more different than Italy. Europeans who settle in America become part of a melting pot of cultures, it's impossible to preserve the original culture. You can preserve it for some years but then it will eventually change. It's normal.
