I'm going to take advantage of this thread to ask you guys something.

I know little or nothing about consoles, the last one I had was a Sega Genesis Mega Drive. I haven't played regularly on the computer for years as well, practically since I was a teenager, but I have been thinking about buying something since this winter it seems we should spend it "locked at home" because of the second wave of the Covid.

Disclaimer: I don’t want to spend a lot of money on something that I’m not even sure if I’m going to use it a lot, so I have been looking into the second hand market and I have seen a few Xbox One X still with a warranty in between 150 € -200 €.

Is this console worth getting or it is a waste of money now that the new generation is coming out? Should I be looking into an Xbox Series S instead? I have a large 4K TV screen btw, would be nice to have something that takes advantage of that (unless it doesn't really make any difference).

The Series S of course if you had thought of acquiring the One X (is capable of resizing to 4K), although if you are willing to spend more money I would buy the Series X. I have tried to reserve it but it is sold out everywhere, but the S is still possible.

I see you old-fashioned and little put into new technologies

There's no way I am going to spend 499€ on a new generation console as of now, I am not a real\serious "gamer". I was considering the Xbox One X because it is affordable as a second hand console and with the Game Pass (10€ a month or something like that) seems like a good value for money.

I did not understand though what you recommended exactly. To get the Xbox Series S instead of the One X? I thought that the Series S does not render 4K games?

My main hobbies are pipes and photography with old analogical cameras and lenses, I guess you can say that I am not the most high-tech guy but it is not exactly true, I buy a lot of tech stuff but skipped on gaming consoles.

The console get 4K in games by upscaling according to Microsoft (minute 1:24), of course the new console is more recommended, the One X is discontinued (but there will still be stock in stores).

If you want to make use of your 4K TV you should buy either PS4 Pro or Xbox One S/Xbox One X.

PS4 Pro and Xbox One X are capable of delivering a 'native' 4K resolution for games and content which offer it and upscale 1080 content to 4K (not true 4K, but better than 1080).

Xbox One S is capable only of upscaling to 4K.

Bear in mind that there are not many games that offer native 4K. Also, when you play games in native 4K frame rate on PS4 Pro drops from 60Hz to 30Hz, but not on Xbox One X since Xbox One X is a somewhat more powerful console.

If you want to buy upcoming consoles go for Xbox Series S if you don't want to pay extra money. It is cheaper and offers 4K. Xbox series X offers 8K.

PS4 Pro is not capable of 4K natively and uses upscaling, nor does it have a 4K disc drive. The 8K in Series X is for movies only.

Everything under 200 fps is like playing Candy Crush

Don't know shit about new consoles but their specs (in terms of actual engineering) aren't meant for very high resolutions or at the very least their specs aren't meant to run smoothly at very high resolutions.

The last console I bought and my favorite was GameCube, from there on I dare to believe that you can build and optimize a desktop PC with the same budget you would spend on a console and use it for work aswell.
