Back in the 60s the Federal Reserve brilliantly convinced the Saudis that they sell their oil in US dollars which is how the US dollar became the reserve currency of the world because everybody needed oil. If it wasn’t for this crisis then the US dollar would’ve been dethroned as the worlds defacto currency sooner or later. The Fed's action to hose the world with US dollars right now solidifies it as still the king of currencies.

Why is this relevant to the pandemic? At least in the case discussed in the video below, daigou traders have purchased face masks at American stores in order to ship them back to China and sell them for a profit.

At the present time, obtaining masks in the U.S. for a reasonable price is difficult, if not impossible. By reasonable, I mean the price prevailing prior to the outbreak. Buying two packages of masks is one thing, but the woman in the video seems to have bought all of the stock in the stores that she went to, or not far from it.

Are daigou traders entirely responsible for the shortage? I can’t say for certain, but they seem to be at least a significant part of the problem.
