It depends on how you define 'fat'. If you are an obese, soft nerdy guy you often end up being an outcast and a victim of bullying. But if you are a big guy you often have a lot of fat over your muscles but you are stronger than the average guy and often end up bullying those who are weaker. Being skinny for a guy is never a very good thing unless you are one of those skinny wiry guys who are super-strong and good at sports.

I grew up in the 90s-2000s and I can really only remember having one fat/chubby friend.

Funny, I don't remember any fat kids in Iraq. And when I was young, it was so unusual to be fat that in some ways the fat kids tended to be treated as "lovable losers." Nowadays all children seem fat, so I don't know how the pecking order would work.
