I can see that in some regards, but he wasn't as bad as he was portrayed imo. His successor spoke very highly of him. I would say a lot of his mistakes were inconsequential to Northern Europeans and Germany which were the main catalysts for the reformation. Corruption also certainly didn't start with him nor was he probably the most corrupt, he was just the most demonized.

Again though I think a lot of his legacy is based on rumor, he didn't do anything others hadn't done, he was just better at it. Even if all the stuff he did was true, you gotta hand it to the guy for keeping power until his death.
