Default Sinn Féin leads way in Irish Times/Ipsos MRBI poll with highest support ever

Sinn Féin has surged into first place in the general election race, with a quarter of all likely voters now saying they intend to vote for the party, according to the final Irish Times/Ipsos MRBI opinion poll of the campaign.

The poll puts Fine Gael back in third place at 20 per cent, behind Fianna Fáil on 23 per cent and Sinn Féin on 25 per cent.

The findings of the poll, which was taken on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of last week, will shock the Government party and suggest that Ireland is on the brink of an historic general election result on Saturday.

Ireland is going though changes and Mary Lou McDonald's popularity is hurting the established parties as Ireland moves towards the left. The Greens will have more influence in Ireland too.

Would love to hear any Irish opinions on the issue as this is interesting.

    ^^^

Noooo! Would be nice to talk/type about the issues rather than hit out with racism on page one.

When you think of it.. the Germans once had a nice nickname for the Brits: Inselaffen. Island monkeys.

A lot of younger people appear to like Sinn Fein who are more left leaning. There is a housing crisis and shortage of hospital beds. Sinn Fein is promising greater government spending to alleviate some of these issues.

They are lacking enough representatives though and Ireland also has proportional voting so my bet is Fianna Fáil will get in. Sinn Fein seem to be definitely on the rise though and do better each election.

Mary Lou McDonald is very articulate and is doing very well in the polls.

Same story as always: if the Right doesn't deliver, people will vote for the Left. And then the Right shouldn't complain that the Left forces through its own agenda. Had the Right delivered on the field of housing, healthcare and social welfare, then they would still be in power.

Ireland's population is growing and as a result not enough houses and hospital beds etc.

It is the result of positive net migration and a sustained natural increase, according to CSO statistician, James Hegarty.

Ireland’s usually resident population is now estimated to be 4,921,500. This is the highest point the population has been since the census of 1851, when it was recorded at 5.1m. By the time of the 1861 census, it had dropped to 4.4m as a result of mass emigration in the decades after the famine of the 1840s.

The report notes 88,600 people immigrated to Ireland in the year ending April 2019. This is a slight decline from the previous 12 months when the figure was 90,300.
In comparison, there was a net increase of non-Irish nationals of 35,800 in the year ending April 2019. This now means non-Irish nationals represent 12.7% of the population, some 622,700.

Which means that the party that was in control before should have anticipated it and taken the necessary steps. Or do nothing and lose the elections.
