The Eastern half of the Roman empire that became the Byzantine empire was very Hellenistic in culture which is why there were no Latin inscriptions found in the middle east and Greece which is not the case for the western half of the Roman empire which it spawned the Romance languages that we know today like French and Spanish. The religious schism between the two halves(Catholicism vs Orthodoxy) only made things worse for the division between the two.
