Ok, I just discovered this thread. So, I'm Komi, born in St. Petersburg, but my mom was born in the Komi lands, so I know quite a bunch. Ask me something, if you want.

What do you think about Hungarians, or do you know about other North & Central-East European Finno-Ugric speaking people? Can tourists visit the Komi Republic?

I'm Hungarian and I would love to visit other Finno-Ugrics in the future

They can, but i think Udmurtia with permic population is more productive as tourist destination if you want ethnocultural tourism.

What's a super cool Komi tradition?

I can write only about komi-permyak people. In 18-19th century whole their ethnic group that lived in the Inva river basin became serf peasantry of Stroganov house. From the one side it was a big opportunity for many persons for social, educational, professional grow, from another they immediately during 4-6 generations lost connection with their old traditions. They became part of big russian culture, but didnt lost their language and didnt assimilated by surrounding russians because had another status to make intermarriages and better connection till 20th century. They are more conservative and more religious than average russian, some are Old Believers, so its difficult to write something about "super cool" traditions or some exotic things. Of course as people that live in rural area and quite isolated they have many superstitions and mystical traditions.

Some people beleive in "ikotka", creature that live in the woman, some people are coming to "ikotnitsa" searching for help in healing. Such phenomena of belief in 2 souls in one body, you can find in russian and komi rural areas of the Russian North. Also before immediately christianisation according to strict Orthodox canons the komi-permyaks (???) created wooden sculptures of Jesus Christ, St. Nicolaus e.t.c. In the beginning of 18th century tradition of religious sculptures was prohibited by Church. You can see them in Perm art museum.

Also they have some specific cuisine. For example cherinyan' - celebration pie with the river fish, i still dont know how to eat it and usually have problems with small sharp bones



They use young field horsetail in pies, dumplings (pelmeni), with omelette or as puree.



Also life near the forest have influence on their cuisine
