I usually prefer Edgar Allan Poe and his very gothic and uber eloquent style :-)

    Another Master.

    And another intensely intriguing psyche.

What is your perception of van Vogt?

Some write that he is a hack - talentless, sterile, kitsch..

Others opine that he is a profound Master.

    What write you?

    What write you, hard?

Stephen King is better imo, but Lovecraft is still pretty good.

Lovecraft has an antiquated and very archaic style : overuse of scientific and technical terms, prevalence of "archaic" forms in the syntax, very long descriptions...

You don't read Lovecraft clearly for the style. It's not mediocre clearly but not extraordinary. It's the setting, the atmosphere, the sensations that Lovecraft can make with his stories and mysterious entities.

"Allobroges vaillants ! Dans vos vertes campagnes,
    Accordez-moi toujours asile et sûreté,
Car j'aime à respirer l'air pur de vos montagnes,
Je suis la Liberté ! la Liberté !"
