    Default Irish general elections

Looks like Sinn Fein has pulled a major upset, a left-wing Irish nationalist party.

The young Irish voters voted for a party that puts housing and health on the agenda ahead of the two economic liberal parties. The monopoly has been broken for at least whatever their government or majority house looks like.

This shows Ireland marches to the beat of it's own drummer. Irish-American influences as well.

Irish reunification and Brexit are not great priorities for the Irish south of the border. This election was driven by issues such as the housing crises and lack of hospital beds. People have just had a gut full of it as nothing has been done for years. The two party duopoly needs a bit of a shake up and this is why Sinn Fein have done so well. It's going to take a while to sort out who is going to partner who because both Fine Gael and Fianna Fail have said they won't go into government with Sinn Fein.

It seems like Ireland has come a long way since the 1980s but there is still room for improvement. I think it has some great minds and should have a standard of living that is second to none in Europe.

Ireland has the fastest growing economy in the EU but a lot of people in Ireland feel this hasn't made their lives any better. It's the same old story of the richer getting richer. Housing prices are too expensive for a lot of people so bread and butter issues are what people are voting for. The big multinationals should be taxed more and there needs to be more public housing. Anyway it has definitely been an interesting election result.

Pretty much the same story in California. Booming economy but out of whack housing prices. I think Ireland and the the Bay Area probably have more in common than most would think.

The Irish aren't happy with Fianna Fail shafting them during the banking crisis and Fine Gael have done stuff all about the housing crisis and other bread and butter issues while they've been in Government. Sinn Fein are a left wing party and have promised tax cuts and more housing. I also think Mary Lou McDonald is a very astute politician and she is very personable. It will be interesting to see if some Government can be formed because otherwise it will be another election and Sinn Fein won't make the same mistake of not fielding enough candidates this time so I don't think Fianna Fail will want another election. I'm interested to see if they will back down and form a partnership with Sinn Fein.
