It is a Spanish wine-cocktail only consumed by tourists, teenagers or women who do not like proper wine and need everything to be sugary.

On a more serious note, it can be pleasant if done properly with a decent wine (in Portugal some people do it with white wine and champagne too) and real fruit. Obviously what you had was none of that, bottled free Sangria is either Don Simon or something similar = extremely cheap wine with juice (no fruit). Bottled Don Simon is something you see homeless people drinking in here to be honest, lol.

Sangria Don Simon is available in every supermarket. It costs like 1,99€ for a plastic bottle of 1.5 liters, you are not expecting it to be great or authentic Sangria right?

Yes, it is sold in Portugal. I know that they have several other products like juices and wines (they claim that their wine is the Spanish wine most sold overseas) but I have only seen the Sangría.

Nowadays you can find other typical Spanish products in Portugal that you couldn't when I was a kid. One thing that all Portuguese families liked to buy when they visited Spain was the famous caramelos con piñones "El Caseiro" and Torrones (nowadays some supermarkets have it too).

My parents and their friends always sold "Mateus Rosé", is a very light wine that you can drink as if it was water.

There are some Spanish wines very similar, but you know, "Mateus Rosé" was from another different country.

Mateus Rosé is one of the most famous wines worldwide and probably the most sold Portuguese wine overseas. Easily recognizable for the shape of the bottle. It is also Queen Elizabeth II favorite wine.
