It isn't necessary if you speak English because nearly everyone under 40 speaks English or at least understands it.

In Europe, German. In the world, French.
    Overall French.
In countries like Czech, Bosnia, Hungary, Slovakia etc German is very widespread and a business language sometimes even ahead English. French is cornered to France in Europe.
Yet half of African countries, Canada, many Pacific and Indian ocean countries have officially French as administration language. That makes French overall stronger.

German Empire was robbed of its colonies after WWI, and they had many: Tanzania, Namibia, Togo, Cameroon, Rwanda, Pacific Mariane Islands etc.

They lost all of them as WWI reparations. It is why German lost the struggle in the beginning for Lingua franca status.

French was Lingua franca and first foreign language taught at school even in a non-colony country like Turkey until 1960.
Then with Germany becoming a workers haven, German was most taught language in Turkey until 1990's, then replaced by English.

2000-2015, interest for German and French collapsed completely in Turkey. Yet I see and notice resurgence in number of Turks learning French and German over last 5 years.

You all known Galatasaray from Turkey as football club, right? That is the name of French lyceum in Istanbul whose football team got success.

Galatasaray means Palace of Galatians or Gauls. Since French people consider themselves Celts from Gaul. Name chosen in 19th century.

It depends on what you want to use them for. If you want to go to Europe so then learn German. If you want to go to Africa or some Caribbean islands so then learn French.

If you only want to learn another language just for pleasure so then study Chinese.
