Ans wouldn't the NATO treaty bind it to intervene if Russia is the aggressor? If they didn't, NATO would lose all its credibility.
We live now in a completely different era and the stakes in such a potential global NATO-Russia war will be very high, and clearly much higher than the whole Turkey with all its giblets may worth.

    1854. Can't argue with that.

Yes yes I know they were very different times. On the other hand, they didn't have a treaty with Turkey that bound them to help if it was attacked. Personally I don't believe Russia would take the risk. Minor air or missile attacks maybe, but not a major war.

I don't believe that either. And yes, if this scenario somehow came to happen, they would indeed help. But how much exactly? Other NATO members wouldn't exactly go out of their way to help Turkey, that's for sure.

The main reason for 1854 war was British policy of having exclusive control over all oceanic straits. So they couldn't allow Russia to have control over Dardanelles.

Far from what happens today. France and UK do not have muscle to do anything against Russia anymore. The only serious player is US but Trump won't lift a finger for Turkey. Since everything is happening on Syrian soil, which makes Turkey an aggressor, NATO have no legal excuse to do anything. Russia is free to do with Turkey as it see fit for so long as Assad is formally agrees. And Assad is not in the position to disagree with Russia.
