    Default Smitty's maternal AncestryDNA results

So I finally got around to buying a DNA test, and I tested my mom, since I did it mostly for the genealogical value. Her known ancestry before taking the test was:

    25% Württemberg
    25% Upper Franconia
    25% Sicily
    6.25% Vorpommern
    6.25% Schleswig-Holstein (with some Danish)
    6.25% Germany, region unknown
    3.125% Lower Saxony
    3.125% Wielkopolskie, Poland

I was ready to rip Ancestry apart for the excess Eastern European and nonexistent Italian. But from looking at the DNA matches, it appears things are not as they seemed, and our Württemberger ancestor was likely from Farther Pomerania. So the elevated Slavic makes a lot more sense now. The Italian, on the other hand, is all but missed. She fits the pattern I've seen for part-Italians on AncestryDNA.

Alas. But there's hope. I still haven't tested my dad.

Wow, that's a lot of Eastern Europe for someone who is German and Sicilian!
Again, I wonder where she would plot on Gedmatch.

Yeah, if I can get her to do GEDmatch (she's a bit wary of it at the moment), I'll post some results. I'm curious too. I think some of the Italian is being misread as EE, as crazy as that is. A cousin of hers is half Sicilian and half Polish, and he gets 64% EE.

Could be because large chunk of Balkans is included under East Europe, but still, your mom results don't make sense for 75% German and quater Sicilian. You really should check gedmatch.

I definitely will if she agrees to it. I thought it was very weird when they first came in.

If she doesn't want to use Gedmatch (apparently many Americans don't) there is yourDNAportal.com with mostly the same calculators.

To me such tests are very uninformative. I mean what is Eastern Europe and Russia? What is Germanic Europe? Too broad and confusing. Sure she's not black, Filipina, Jewish or Mexican but other than that still pretty vague.

But if different tests can give completely different results, and contradict known ancestry, doesn't it prove that those tests are unreliable? Why give money to companies that sell unreliable information?

Thanks for the suggestion. I may try that out.

These tests aren't great, I agree. I did it mainly for the matches, so I wasn't disappointed. But I'm still interested in doing some calculator runs, so hopefully she'll agree to it.
