I think the Kurds are further west and they look somewhat different.
The Afghans in California depending on their ethnicity can look very Iranian as a group. Obviously we don't look identical but still many Afghans are very similar to Iranians.
Here is what I see here in LA. The bizarre thing they dress and act very similar to each other too.

In my humble but honest opinion , there are 3 periods of afghan influx into England .
The first wave which includes my family are the ones who arrived in the UK during late 80s to early 90s. These were mainly middle class families that escaped post soviet era . The second wave was during late 90s to early 2000s , these were mainly working class families escaping Taliban rue . The third wave was at the end of the 00s decade and start of 2010 decade . These were mainly young afghans mainly pashtuns seeking asylum in UK through Europe, Germany then France . The afghans in the wedding are mainly the first two waves . Your freshies are mainly the third waves as well low class families from the second wave . Afghans in the midland are all pashtuns , I think Alot of them are Pakistani pashtuns too .
