In fact - reading from Norman Stone's Turkey A Short History, you even had a special class of people that you extracted money from: the so-called Dönme. Jewish converts to Islam and you taxed them to the hilt under the varlik vergisi property tax which was why businesses went bankrupt and you used it as if it was some sort of jizya tax. You only dropped that tax in 1944 because you lot tried to cuddle up to the Allies because you knew your friends were losing the war.
