USA reconfirms Greece’s EEZ zone

US Ambassador to Greece, Geoffrey Pyatt stated that all Greek islands, irrespective of size, are entitled to exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and continental shelf, during an interview on SKAI TV on Wednesday.

Pyatt also reiterated that the US government guarantees Greece’s security and is working behind the scenes to ease tension in the Aegean.

On the ‘illegal’ Turkey-Libya agreement, Pyatt supports Athens’ position, noting that it does not invalidate Greece’s rights in the region, based on the International Law of the Sea.

By the Turkish logic islands like Sicily, Corsica and islands states like Cuba, Ireland, Britain, Indonesia or Japan have no EEZ.

The Law of the Sea is customary law, therefore binding even to those who have not signed it.

The Maritime law clearly stipulates that all islands regardless of size have EEZ.

All Greek islands form an Archipelago of islands connected with the mainland, a cohesive whole.

And Greece's coast is three times as large as the whole coast of Turkey from black sea to Syria.

No Erdoclown Greece has the largest coast in the Mediterranean, it is three times larger than Turkey’s!

Secondly where does the Law of the Sea state that the length of a coast affects the EEZ.

Denmark is smaller than Sweden and yet that did not affect her EEZ.

Cuba is smaller than the US and that hasn’t affected her EEZ. Cuba is only 90 miles from the coast of Florida, but the United States did not argue that Cuba, because it is an island, does not have any rights to an EEZ.

If there was a case where a couple of small islands standing very close to a massive mainland, and without any geographical support from their own mainland, it was St. Pierre & Miquelon belonging to France. Yet the Court rejected the idea that their share was to be reduced because they were purportedly `superimposed’ on the Canadian continental shelf or because they were not independent.

Turkey knows fully well its position does not have a leg to stand on. Her arguments have been rejecting by UNCLOS.
