why do people here say that syrians cannot pass as white in america?

In Australia and Scandinavia, most Syrians cannot pass as whites there though. A standard white person in such countries is somewhere between an Atlandid and Nordic, though at times a very light Med type can be included (think Natalie Portman). If you don't fit these, you're a 'wog', Mediterranean, Arab/Middle Easterner, South Asian, or 'other'.

In America, it seems, even the darkest Caucasians (like this Indian American politician Nikki Haley below) can be oddly considered white:

It's not just that. It's the lack of racio-cultural awareness and education in America.

more than race , its about culture as well , founding fathers of america were european white , so other "whites" outside of europe would have hard time getting this label , even if they pass.
But tbh these things are getting less and less important , earlier there was a concept of bamboo ceiling that non whites have hard time moving up corporate ladder beyond certain limit but that concept is getting weaken with many indian americans reaching CEO positions.
Only major area is hollywood, i doubt even jakie chan would get a tier one movie like from say martin scorsese, but for many iconic roles phenotype still matters e.g you need someone like clint eastwood or jhon wayne to play lead role in a wild west movie, since folklore demands it. Nothing wrong with it.
