Default New Dinosaur News - 26/2/2020

The body plan of Halszkaraptor escuilliei (Dinosauria, Theropoda) is not a transitional form along the evolution of dromaeosaurid hypercarnivory
    Andrea Cau February 25, 2020

The dromaeosaurid theropod Halszkaraptor escuilliei is characterized by several unusual features absent in other paravians, part of which has been interpreted as diagnostic of a novel lineage adapted to a semiaquatic ecology. Recently, these evolutionary and ecological interpretations have been challenged, and Halszkaraptor has been claimed to be a transitional form between non-dromaeosaurid maniraptoriforms and other dromaeosaurids: following that reevaluation, its peculiar body plan would represent the retention of several maniraptoran plesiomorphies, lost among other dromaeosaurids, and not an adaptation to a novel ecology. This alternative scenario is here carefully investigated and tested. It is shown that most statements supporting this scenario are based on misinterpretation of anatomical traits and bibliography. Once these statements have been corrected, character state transition optimization over a well-supported phylogenetic framework indicates that the large majority of the peculiar features of the Halszkaraptor lineage are derived novelties acquired by the latter after its divergence from the last ancestor shared with eudromaeosaurs, and thus are not maniraptoriform plesiomorphies. At least seven novelties of the Halszkaraptor lineage are convergently acquired with spinosaurids, and are integrated in semiaquatic adaptations: one of these is reported here for the first time. The amount of morphological divergence of Halszkaraptorinae from the ancestral dromaeosaurid condition is comparable to those of Microraptorinae and Velociraptorinae. Among extant taxa, the sawbills (Mergini, Anseriformes) show the closest ecomorphological similarity with the peculiar body plan inferred for Halszkaraptor. The halszkaraptorine bauplan is thus confirmed as a derived amphibious specialization, and does not represent a transitional stage along the evolution of dromaeosaurids.

A Small-Bodied Troodontid (Dinosauria, Theropoda) from the Upper Cretaceous Wulansuhai Formation of Inner Mongolia, China

A new small-bodied troodontid (LH PV39) recovered from the Upper Cretaceous Wulansuhai Formation, Suhongtu, Inner Mongolia, China, is described. The new specimen preserves six postaxial cervical vertebrae, five completely fused sacral and four posterior caudal vertebrae in addition to two manual unguals. The completely fused neurocentral junctions indicate that a skeletally mature individual of the same species of LH PV39 would be smaller than Philovenator and comparable in body size to a skeletal mature individual of Almas. The extremely dorsoventrally compressed sacral centra and neural canal, and the middle three sacral centra that are shorter and wider than the first and the last one distinguishing LH PV39 from other known troodontids. A series of phylogenetic analyses were conducted using modified published matrices. By coding LH PV39 in different strategies, the troodontid affinity of LH PV39 is confirmed and it was recovered as the sister taxon of either Mei and Sinovenator (LH PV39 scored as a separate OTU) or Linhevenator (incorporating LH PV39 into Philovenator) in the best resolved coelurosaurian interrelationships. The referral of LH PV39 to Philovenator does not seriously alter the phylogenetic position of Philovenator nor the interrelationships of troodontids. This new finding confirms that the small and large sized troodontids are coexisted in the Gobi Desert of the Mongolia Plateau until the end of Cretaceous.

So, we have 10,770 living species of Dinosaurs alive today - we just call them Birds

But even modern birds fon't have feathers on their feet, yet these paleoartists depict this new dino with feathers to the metacarpal joints... hmm

Actually, dinosaurs had feathers all over including their own feet. The scales of today's Birds on their feet are just feathers that had revolved back to scales again.

    Great article

    https://www.icr.org/article/how-do-dinosaurs-fit-in

"The Bible says that all things were created during the six-day creation week (Exodus 20:11, etc.), including dinosaurs. The reptilian dinosaurs were (by definition) land animals which were created on Day Six under the category of "beast of the earth" (Genesis 1:24, 25). There were also large marine reptiles created on Day Five (v. 21). Along with all animals and mankind, they were created to be plant eaters (vs. 29,30), for there was no death before Adam and Eve rebelled against God."

Birds are Dinosaurs themselves, and they came from ground-dwelling theropod Dinosaurs since the first stem-bird was found in Germany that proved Darwin's theory of evolution back in the 1800's, Archaeopteryx.

And btw, there are Christian scientists today who believe in evolution too.

Not only, but major Christian denominations and Churches, like Catholics and also many protestants, accept evolution without problems. They argue that the Bible is not a history book - even if it includes historical facts - but a religious text whose aim it to teach faith and religious truths using also analogies and mythical tales. Actually the same argument was already used by Galileo four centuries ago to defend his heliocentric theory.
