Yes you are absolutely right. This misconception has been plagued by liberal candidates being overshadowed by overly progressive ones. At least this is the case for the United States. I haven’t kept up with politics much outside of my country anymore, it gives me a headache.

As an example to what you said, anyone can follow the coverage of the US presidential elections on MSNBC and CNN (Liberal channels), and they tend to be even harsher to Bernie Sanders (someone who isn't even too far on the Left, but more like a Social Democrat), than on Fox News (Conservative channel). I heard dozens of times the Communist labeling of Bernie on those two Liberal channels, as if I was watching some pro-Trump channel, it's crazy.
