I lived by the Amish in PA for one year. It's not as idealistic as you might think. You have lack of education, inbreeding leading to genetic diseases, and half of them leave the community as soon as they are old enough.

Finding peace or happiness in the west is always connected to self expression and consumption.

People cant even believe that asceticism,puritanism and hard labour can ultimately lead to happiness. Thats the christian philosophy if we isolated it from the religious aspect.
