Estimates show that there are only 40,000 homeless vets, you can't help drug addicts or crazy people that don't wan't help. My family is a military family and I can tell you guys are taken care of after the military especially if they have a pension. They also have a lot of support groups like VFW.

There was an idea back then that patients in hospitals were mistreated and dosed with lots of drugs, which is partially true, but they should have reformed the hospitals not eliminated them. The book and movie "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was an example of this attitude. In my opinion, a schizophrenic person would have trouble fending for themselves. They can't get a job at McDonald's.

Yea if they aren't hurting people and their family wants to take care of them great, but the violent, dangerous and criminal mentally ill people need to be removed from society. I agree it should be heavily reformed, I think for the generally mental ill people; they should be greatly taken care of, safe and as happy as they can be. I have no ill feelings for homeless people, mentally ill or other vulnerable populations but; I think healthy people and kids who are usually the first victims often times need protection and a solid society. I think the problem like with prisons are the people who run it. Aside from the federal system, state ran institutions are usually staffed by mildly competent who are often weak minded lower class individuals. I feel we need to hammer out out our social issues will prevent a lot of our problems including mental health.
