Default Photos taken by Vilho Setälä 100 years ago: West Finno Ugric people

At first a pearl, young Livonians. Today Livonians have died out and these photos are unique. Western Uralic people from ancient Livonia to Torne river valley share common genes.

There are more photos of Livonians taken by Vilho Setälä here: https://www.kuvakokoelmat.fi/picture...na=liiviläiset.

You can view all the images by running a shell command like this:

    printf %s '<img src=https://www.kuvakokoelmat.fi/pictures/small/SUK1/SUK126_'{1..162}.jpg\>>/tmp/a.html;open /tmp/a.html

In this photo, the man on the left has a worse facial skeleton. His mandible and malars are smaller, so the outline of his face is less angular.

    https://www.kuvakokoelmat.fi/pictures/view/SUK126_3

Out of the three children in this photo, the one in the middle has the scariest-looking eyes, because he (or she?) has the most round eyes, the highest upper eyelid exposure, and the highest orbits. (Even though of course babies have larger relative orbit size.) The mom also doesn't look that pretty, because her face and nose are too elongated, and her eyelids are too prominent. She also has a too low ratio of subnasal segment length to chin length.

    https://www.kuvakokoelmat.fi/pictures/view/SUK126_160

I think this woman has very good facial morphology. She has large cheekbones and a long subnasal segment. She has a that is wide and where the tip of the nose has high z-axis depth. Despite her age, she still has low orbits. The soft tissue of her face is also distributed evenly, so she doesn't have elliptical accumulations of soft tissue over the cheeks.

    https://www.kuvakokoelmat.fi/pictures/view/SUK126_19

This man has similarly good morphology. He also has large cheekbones, a long subnasal segment, and low orbits.

    https://www.kuvakokoelmat.fi/pictures/view/SUK126_96

These women both have sad-looking eyes because their palpebral fissure inclination is too low. They also don't look robust enough, so that their cheekbones are too small, and the shape of their head is too elliptical or oval-like. Their nose is also too narrow, and the z-axis depth of the tip of their nose is too low.

    https://www.kuvakokoelmat.fi/pictures/view/SUK126_129

In this photo, I think the woman on the left has better nose shape, because she has a lower bridge of the nose and a more upturned nose.

    https://www.kuvakokoelmat.fi/pictures/view/SUK126_159

Both the man and woman in this photo have good facial structure with high cheekbones. The man has deep-set eyes with straight and low supraorbital rims.

    https://www.kuvakokoelmat.fi/pictures/view/SUK126_117

Here the girl on the left looks weak. Her facial skeleton is too small, and she has unfirm skin, so she has elliptical accumulations of soft tissue over the cheeks. Her supraorbital rims are also slanted outwards, which makes her eyes look more sad.

    https://www.kuvakokoelmat.fi/pictures/view/SUK126_91

In this photo, I think the boy on the right has basically the ideal East Baltid male phenotype.

    https://www.kuvakokoelmat.fi/pictures/view/SUK126_92

In this photo, out of the four women in the back row, I think the two in the middle look worse after adjusting for age. Their facial skeleton is smaller and less robust, their nose is narrower, their mouth is narrower, and their lips are thinner. The boy on the right in the front row has very good facial structure, with large cheekbones, high forward growth, and low orbits.

    https://www.kuvakokoelmat.fi/pictures/view/SUK126_69

The woman on the left in this photo also has good facial structure, so that she looks almost Native American.

    https://www.kuvakokoelmat.fi/pictures/view/SUK126_111

In this photo, the girl with a green dot over her head has very good facial structure. She has a low y-axis position of the glabella, so the vertical distance from her glabella to the bottom of her nose is short. The two women with a red dot over their head have worse facial structure with a more elongated face shape. They have a higher y-axis position of the glabella, so their supraorbital rims are more slanted outwards, and the distance from their glabella to the bottom of their nose is longer. Out of the 4 men in the photo, the one in the middle in the back row looks the weakest, because for example he has the smallest facial skeleton.

    https://www.kuvakokoelmat.fi/pictures/view/SUK126_126

This woman has ugly-looking eyes, because she has too high pretarsal show, too low palpebral fissure inclination, and because the skin of her eyelids is dark. The bridge of her nose is also too long, and her face is too elongated.

    https://www.kuvakokoelmat.fi/pictures/view/SUK126_95

This woman has good facial structure, because she has a large and robust facial skeleton.

    https://www.kuvakokoelmat.fi/pictures/view/SUK126_161

These boys both have sad-looking eyes, because their supraorbital rims are slanted outwards.

    https://www.kuvakokoelmat.fi/pictures/view/SUK126_130

Here you can tell that the boy on the left has good facial structure, because he has a large mandible and prominent malars.

    https://www.kuvakokoelmat.fi/pictures/view/SUK126_4

Here I think the girl on the right looks better than the girl on the left. The skin of her eyelids is less dark, and she has lower and more rectangular orbits. Her nose is shorter, wider, and more upturned, and she has a wider root of the nose and a higher z-axis depth of the tip of the nose. Her face is also less elongated, her forehead is shorter, and her cheekbones are more prominent. Even though her mouth is covered, you can tell that she probably also has a wider mouth.

    https://www.kuvakokoelmat.fi/pictures/view/SUK126_126

Here I think the boys with a green dot over their head have good facial structure, with large cheekbones and a robust facial skeleton. The boys with a red dot over their head look more weak, so that they look more like typical IE Europeans.

    https://www.kuvakokoelmat.fi/pictures/view/SUK126_84

Here I think the man on the right looks the worst. His nose is the longest, most downturned, and least convex. His face is also the most long and narrow, and he his orbits are the highest and the most round.

    https://www.kuvakokoelmat.fi/pictures/view/SUK126_149

Out of these three children, the boy on the left has the least sad-looking eyes, partially because his supraorbital rims are the least slanted outwards. He therefore also has a short distance from the glabella to the bottom of the nose. His lips are also the thickest. On the other hand, the boy on the right has an underdeveloped facial skeleton, so his jawline is underdefined. His mouth is also too narrow.

    https://www.kuvakokoelmat.fi/pictures/view/SUK126_69

I think these persons have good facial structure, so they look more like East Baltid or Ladogan:

These persons have bad facial structure, so they look more like typical IE Europeans:
