There are no hard proves that Bulgars were heavily Mongoloid, at least not these who fought the Byzantine and established Bulgaria. I have seen only 1 sample tested. Bulgars later in Volga Bulgaria on place of today's Tatarstan definitely were more Mongoloid due to mixing with local tribes.

Well, I didn't say 'heavily'. But hypothetically speaking if they were ca. 20% Mongoloid, kinda like modern Volga Tatars, being 25% Old Bulgar would mean ca. 5% Mongoloid and that is almost never found in ethnic Bulgarians. I can't really imagine them being 90-100% European being originally from the Azov-Caspian Steppe. However I may not know something, that's for sure.
