Should be fun. I don't see the EU surviving the 2020's in its present form either though. Personally, I think we in the Netherlands should prefer to armed neutrality (that means rebuilding our own military - preferably rebuilding our own armaments industry).

hmm.. I think Finns will do well, with or without NATO. Trump is an American centric pro Anglosphere person who really does not have much stake in Europe outside of Britain. His policies makes sense from an America first point of view.

Finland has never gotten any protection from NATO or west! NATO's missles actually pointed directly to Finland until end of 1950's (as you were so much scared of Communism/Russians). Cowards! Some live that reality everyday. Nope, the only ones who have given some help to Finland are Germans (WWI and WWII).

Except for some of its former satellites/colonies, Russia is not a serious military threat, and nor is communism a serious ideological threat.

Well, NATO will collapse, sooner or later. But I would not call Russia a non-serious military threat. Although they lost the large numbers of equipment from the days of the Soviet Union, they are modernising their conventional military strength and are more 'lean' compared to 90s Russia. If the Chechen war happen again, for example, 2020 Russian military will crush them will ease, while 90s Russia was mired by corruption and oligarch incompetence.

NATO only exists because it was a response to Soviet expansionism in the 1940s and 1950s. The Soviet Union is gone. The threat of communism is no longer coming from without, but within. The Russian Federation does not want a conflict with the US because they know they cannot win, at best, it would merely result in equal destruction (if they could even manage that, with the deteriorated state of their nuclear weapons and the improved missile defense systems the US has made in recent decades). Even EU politicians wanted the American troops to leave Europe, so that Russia can finally dictate European policy. But in the end it turned out they wouldn't "disband" NATO, given how their liberal/leftist people who suddenly were so concerned about national security feared and warned about.

As a result of this change in geopolitics, NATO is useless. The only benefit Americans get from it is the ability to station their military closer to economic interests (like the Middle East), and even that is starting to wane in value.

If Americans want a NATO-like union with actual benefits, they should do so with East Asian countries against China. China is the current opponent to American global hegemony, not Russia. The Russians are no longer a serious threat (to the US at least, they could be a risk to European economic interests).

We can't stress enough the fact that, with or without NATO, the worm is already in the apple and that, unfortunately, there aren't 1000 ways to get rid of its existence.
All we need is a strong and a charismatic man to sort out problems out, preferably not an Austrian.
