One side of my family has always insisted since I was very young that I have a white spouse. It was essentially brainwashing and I now find it ludicrous that I was instilled with the mindset that I need to have ‘white’ kids, especially as a mixed race dude. I had black ‘girlfriends’ when I was in school and there was always disapproval. I only really opened up to serious dating from the age of 18, and am very happy with my gorgeous Polynesian Metal. We’re moving in together in 2021

Then what do you say? Because when I answer Romanian I lowkey feel bad since I'm not really full Romanian. And it's not like I can answer all the time my full ethnicity list. So I say I'm eastern european mutt. Or a eastern european mix.

Every european nation are mixed a lot with it's neighbours and local minorities this doesn't make you mutt. You would be mutt if your ancestry is 50-50% and you would know the native language of your both side for example hungarian and romanian in your case, but you can't speak hungarian so you can't be hungarian or bulgarian or croatian, you're simple romanian who live in Spain.
In my case i can speak german and hungarian fluently, my ancestry is 3/4 german, 1/4 hungarian, so i can choose between hungarian and german identity because i know the both language and i have dual culture, and i choosed the german side, my sister choosed the hungarian side and her identity is hungarian, but to be honest what makes you hungarian? You can't speak the language, you don't know the hymn, you have never lived here, you know nothing about hungarian society. So i don't consider yourself a mutt, but a romanain person who respect her all ancestry. No offense this is just my opinion.

My mother once expressed a random and almost comical sense of alarm when she thought a girl I was dating was Mexican for some reason. I've never really been in a true interracial relationship.

Have any of you experienced flak from relatives for dating someone of a different race?

Fortunately, my parents and my mom's side of the family are open-minded about interracial dating, and there have been a lot of instances of interracial marriage on my mom's side of the family, but my dad's family is not as open-minded. I have dated people of many races, and I never base how happy I am in a relationship off of the crap my dad's family says, but it is still annoying to listen to.

They didn't even tell me the truth until I was around 12 and I started asking about these things.

Hungarian-Croatian are similar and Bulgarian-Romanian are also similar.

But the first two are not so similar to the latter two. When using Global25:

I wouldn't call an Irish/French mix a mutt though. They are both Western European even if the Irish are a bit drifted. I wouldn't call an Irish/Polish mix a mutt either even though the Poles are Eastern Europeans (or maybe they are more Central/Eastern) in g25 Irish are closer to Poles than they are to Spanish regions for example. It's all relative really. I suppose Hungarians and Croatians are closer to Central Europeans and Romanians/Bulgarians are more Southeast Europeans but I don't think in all honesty that European mixes are truly mutts. Culturally there are differences but with the examples you posted Irish and French are Western Europeans and Hungarians and Bulgarians are Eastern Europeans.
