It’s called the Bible Belt because an overwhelming majority of people are evangelical Fundamentalist Christians, Baptist and Pentecostal. Old time gospel hell fire and brimstone churches, revivals in circus tents King James Version bibles only, catholic and other ecumenical sects are rare. West Virginia is the only state where use of venomous snakes are still allowed in religious services.

I have seen snake churches in Tennessee and Alabama though, accidentally went into one in Tennessee asking for directions late at night .

Many Republican Conservative Christians from Bible belt dislike Catholics not much has changed since then.

Some integrated areas like Lousiana though, but true for the most part. A lot of the South are Scots-Irish, very clannish people.

I always thought the German ancestry was more dominant than British (including Irish) one in the South.
I know an ex Fundamentalist Christian from the south took a DNA she was mostly closer to Irish and English.
She became a white supremacist and an atheist, I learned about the KJV Bible from her, she claimed an other Bible translation (NIV?) was a Satanic work and had a big dislike for Catholics.
And also that the KJV was the promised translation.

The midwest is far more German in some places, it's considered the south though too, especially Kentucky and Missouri. Most people I grew up around had British, Irish or Scottish surnames. There was always a handful of German names though, surprisingly mostly Dutch.
