We only have black bears where I live, and I was taught that they more or less have the same temperment as white tailed deer (in regards to relating to humans). Still, I respect them and give distance. Getting between a mother and cubs, or encountering an unusually aggressive bear is not my idea of a good time.

Two possible reasons I just thought of:
-Brown bears in Europe were historically exposed to a greater density of human beings than their North American counterparts
-During the last ice age the habitat of North American bears was much more large and dangerous predators/competitors.
