British Islanders are as a whole paler in complexion than Continental Europeans, due to a higher frequency of ginger genes which favors even lighter complexion and often freckled too. Thus Ben Franklin based “whiteness” on his narrow - minded view as many people of his epoch did. He did view Continental Saxons as direct relatives of the English. The weird thing, is that Lower Saxony and NW Germany does indeed have a much higher frequency skin type I/II than the rest of Germany and the Netherlands. So who knows? Ben might have been right in that aspect. You are mistaken the Saxons that Ben is referring are Lower Saxons, the “original homeland” of Saxons before they were dispersed by Charlemagne to other parts of Germany and Continental Europe such as Saxony etc...
