The KKK from the 1900's to the 1930's was a completely different entity. The KKK used to battle the Mafia and Bootleggers, it started out from a small secret society of confederate insurgents to a huge movement in the 1900's. People call the 1900s-1930's the Second KKK but it's actually the third, the first being The Knights of the Golden Circle which was a pre-war movement. The first (second in my book) Klan was purely an Insurgent movement, the Second (Third in my book) was a national movement that spread the clan to every corner. The third (fourth in my book) was influenced by the White Power movement of the 1960's and 1970's, which led it back to a more insurgent but more terror oriented group as it exists today.

There were Union groups like the KKK in the beginning, they were just masked insurgents. In the Midwest and after the war America was like Northern Ireland. The KKK didn't even invent goofy ass uniforms either, it started with pro-Union groups. I don't wanna defend the KKK, but I think the complexities should be noted.

I think I read that the KKK was also in favor of Hitler, even most of them were against the United States joining the war to fight him.

German national socialism has no chance in the 21st century. Germany does not even have any nuclear weapons. Neo-Nazis are clowns at best.

So if Hitler hadn't started World War II do you think Germany would have abolished national socialism?

The KKK didn't warm up to Hitler until the 1960's when it evolved into a White Nationalist movement. The KKK might have always been racist in some contexts, but it originally had really nothing to do with race in terms of it's motives. Although they didn't view blacks kindly at all for sure. Hitler also wasn't a fan of the KKK.

Would like to get PaleoEuropean's comments from the standpoint of historical accuracy:

According to what I've read, the Klan was founded in December 1865 (1866?) by a group of Confederate war veterans. In the beginning, the Klan was simply a way to take their minds off the lives they had to endure at the time. Not long afterwards, the Klan morphed into an organization of vigilantes / regulators.

After the end of the American civil war, a Northern organization called the Union League came into the South. It tried to bait Southern black people into hating whites, they succeeded in many cases (but not all), and black militias were formed.

The South became lawless to the point where people thought that vigilantes were needed, and the Klan stepped into the breach, along with other secret organizations.

I believe that there were individuals and groups in the Klan that did lynch black people just because they were black, and that is just as evil as we've been taught. But there were also people who pretended to be Klansmen. They used this disguise as they committed crimes or settled old scores. And then, of course, there were the vigilantes. If a society gets completely out of control, then some people will conclude that vigilantes are necessary.

EDIT: also wondering if the Klan was ever involved in anything anti-communist. Somewhere, I may have read that a U.S. communist organization came out against the Klan specifically.
