Default Older coronavirus patients could be taken OFF ventilators so they can be given to younger and health

Older coronavirus patients could be taken OFF ventilators so they can be given to younger and healthier patients under BMA guidelines

Elderly patients with a low chance of survival could be taken off ventilators so they can be given to healthier ones under new guidelines issued to doctors.

This is a sad necessity (due to lack of ventilators ), because most of older people die anyway, despite the connected ventilators and all attempts to save them. But younger people have much higher chances of survival with ventilator.

So it's like to choose, either you use ten ventilators to save one old man out of ten sick old men or you use ten ventilators to save nine young man out of ten sick young men.

The 3D parts of the ventilator need about 15 hours to be fully printed.
"The entire project is made available on an open source basis, because we think selling such devices at this time would be very unethical," said Szymon Chrupczalski, engineer and designer.
The company states that the cost of the components necessary to build Ventilaid should not exceed 44 Euros. Clinical testing of the product has yet to be completed, but the team is already discussing launching trials of the product with medical experts in many countries. In the meantime, the team have stressed that the device should only be used as a last resort when hospital resources have become exhausted.
"We want to help doctors, we want to help patients who will not be able to access any other medical equipment," Chrupczalski added.
Urbicum is currently working on a second prototype of VentilAid, project whose tagline is: "From Poland with love".
A ventilator, also known as "artificial lung", is a machine that helps a patient breathe and has been crucial on saving lives amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

    Indeed

hat's the TRUE risk of dying from coronavirus if you are in hospital? NHS data shows 66% of patients hooked up to ventilators will succumb to the killer infection

A report from the Intensive Care National Audit and Research Center (ICNARC) found coronavirus patients in the UK who are put on ventilation only survive a third of the time.

High death rate raises questions about effectiveness of critical care for patients
