Romanians like to joke a lot but they have this thing of not joking on "serious" things like nationhood (nation origin, flag, nation heroes), religion (Orthodox saints, church), one's mother etc. actually you can easily get in trouble if you do joke or troll them on these topics. also self humour is rare, they look at it as self denigration, even when it's very mild with oneself. I'd say in these regards Romanians are a bit similar to Ukrainians, and I'd say even more that Ukrainians joke even less and are even more sensitive on "serious" topics and especially if one makes a joke remark on someone. because it's important to maintain "face" in public or in others' eyes.

I'm curious what other Easterners and Balkanites say - are Easterners more sensitive to jokes, less tolerant? what's it like in Yugoslavia/Bulgaria/Czechoslovakia/Poland?

I think this describes Moldovans better than other Romanians.

Wallachians will joke about anything (including themselves and their family), and at any sign of annoyance (which they perceive as a weakness) they'll push the pedal to the metal and get really vicious with trolling. Moldovan's lack of appetite for jokes on sensitive topics is a cultural shock for Wallachians (which sometimes they experience in the form of a proper beating ).

    British humour is the best.

Followed by Polish sense of humour (if it's not something stale about your mother-in-law)

One glorious example of this ink black humour:

I was laughing my ass off here:

German humour is like Soviet food: not everybody gets it.

German humour makes me laugh acutally, I think with all comedy it is all about the delivery.

Elis James as very funny, in as much as his accent and pronouciation, anything he says sounds amusing
