Hearing Calabrian Greek spoken in the villages of Gallicianň and Bova. For those who speak Greek, I didn't find it to be ancient or Doric sounding at all. There are some words that certainly are old ("outhe" for "no", "chloro" for the color green, "anthos" for flower, "platego" for "to speak" which probably comes from "politeuo" (πολιτευω) which means "to act like a citizen/speak in a public forum" etc.). But it basically sounds like Italianized modern Greek with some ancient words.

There appear to be no theta, gamma, or delta sounds evidencing Latin/Italian influence. Anything beginning with a "kappa" is pronounced with a "che" rather than a hard c sound like modern Greek. Hence you hear "che" for "and" instead of kai (και). The "ψ" is inverted. Rather than a "ps" sound in modern Greek, Calabrian Greek say "sp." Hence, the modern Greek word "psyche" (ψυχή) is pronounced "spyche." Also all "chi" ("Χ") and "xi"sounds ("Ξ") seem pronounced like "sh" which is common in modern Italian.

wonderful. I've spent five summers or so in Calabria long time ago, in the Sila mountains. a great place. and so full of history. they speak Greek also around Vibo Valentia.

they've got Byzantine-shaped churches in many villages but they're used for Catholic rite. people are proud of the Greek heritage. the main university in the region is called Magna Graecia.

quite a few words of the Calabrese dialect of Italian are of Greek origin.

this is definitely the part of Italians that we call each other unna faccia unna razza, not Milanese or Tuscans

No, most of these people like Griko people in Apulia live in Italy for more than 1000 years before the schism of 1054. It was during this era that Byzantine empire lost its last territories in Italy.
They were isolated by the rest of Greeks since then but they maintained their language and culture for centuries. They started to abandon it at the middle of 20th century.

My calabrian ancestry is near Sila mountains :

The part that is undoubtetly more Greek influenced is Reggio Calabria/Catanzaro/Crotone. I see less of that in Cosenza, though there was Sybaris.

"Allobroges vaillants ! Dans vos vertes campagnes,
    Accordez-moi toujours asile et sűreté,
Car j'aime ŕ respirer l'air pur de vos montagnes,
Je suis la Liberté ! la Liberté !"
